On the other hand, much of the Deadpool gameplay experience is certainly formulaic and safe…so secure you might think developer High Moon phase Studios is playing some sort of self-referential “hey, isn’t this ironic how normal this is? ” meta-gag on you. But it’s not. No, Deadpool talks a big game but offers a standard action experience which is turducken of videogame parody: It is what it parodies what.
For those not familiar with the glory of the one and only “Merc using a Mouth, ” the spandex-clad Deadpool is himself a parody of an anti-hero. A mainstay of Marvel Comics, he was given a therapeutic factor by the Weapon X boys (the same kinds who adamantium-ized Wolverine) within an experimental procedure that remaining him certifiably insane - and self-aware that he's in fact a comic book persona. For that reason, Deadpool also knows he’s a videogame character. Actually he starts the story -- what little there is -- by forcing High Moon phase to make a game about him and throws out the script that sends over to him for approval. It’s a fittingly nuts approach that’s true to Deadpool’s character, even if it does not necessarily make for a strong story.
Using guns, katanas, and a harmful love for chimichangas, Deadpool pokes fun at videogame clichés and tropes nearly as much as he pokes bad guys with sharp objects. It may be pretty obvious that Deadpool’s writers had a blast taking this character into interactive 3D; he regularly provides arguments with the voices in his head, and at one stage can hop on word bubbles emanating from his unhealthy mind to cross a toxic river. At 1 point, you can even instigate a creepy stalker situation between a dialogue tree choice and yourself. It’s pretty inventive, clever stuff honestly, that is made even more enjoyable by simply Nolan North’s very enthusiastic delivery as the tone of Deadpool.
But then there is the little matter of the recurring gameplay. In pseudo Batman-style, you can chain together combos with a mix of melee and shooting combat that, while not exactly bad, starts off uninteresting and grows more stale the longer you play. It can be fun slicing into a henchman one second before finishing him off which has a shotgun blast to the head, but there’s not enough range in attacks and stronger enemies can seem unreasonably resists your relentless hacking.
The greater the combo chain, the more DP points you’ll earn. These can be spent on getting new weapons (shotguns, sledgehammers, grenades, bear traps, and so forth ) or on enhancements to existing ones. Yet few of these options really change up the gameplay -- most only enhance harm and make enemies take fewer hits. It’s a perfunctory upgrade system and doesn’t exactly stretch the imaginative grey matter. Deadpool is also armed with a teleportation device that lets him *bampf* brief distances like Nightcrawler, that can be useful for dodging attacks or perhaps making a quick escape once cornered. The downside is that the teleport button is the same the one which appears over an opponent’s head to trigger a special combination; get the timing wrong and you could zap behind him instead of hitting him. Teleporting in tight spaces can be specifically disorienting because of the close camera perspective, with enemies instantly off-camera and you not knowing exactly where you are in relation to all of them.
Another annoyance is the lock-on targeting button for gunplay. It works most of the time, but oftentimes pressing it will lock on a spot just to the side of the target’s fleshy, perforate-able pieces. When a bunch of identical bad guys rush into a room to charge you - and they will, consistently - the last thing you want to do is definitely waste precious time re-targeting the melons.
